JAPN 1020 Elementary Japanese

Continuation of JAPN 1010 with a focus on real-world speaking practice as well as the introduction of kanji.

JAPN 2010 Intermediate Japanese

Continuation of Japanese 1010 and 1020 with practice in conversation, composition, and introductory reading of short stories. Strengthens vocabulary and grammar while continuing with kanji study.

JAPN 3160 Japanese for International Business

Continuation and review of JAPN 2010 with daily speaking practice, expanding on vocabulary and kanji, as well as practical use of grammar, and more difficult readings.

Kanji, pronunciation, and comprehension practice while practicing practical language skills with peers and the professor.

Focuses on professional communication and business etiquette in Japanese. Develops written and spoken language skills for formal contexts, including keigo (honorific speech), email correspondence, and culturally appropriate interactions in business settings.

JAPN 3980 Directed Reading (Japanese for International Business II)

Program for advanced Japanese language in business context. Covering firms such as Nintendo, coca-Cola, and Walmart, discussing their globalization, and international expansion. Fully taught in Japanese while expanding on kanji, keigo, and business vocabulary.

Intermediate Practical Japanese SA

Intermediate Practical Japanese WA

Designed for those who have completed beginner-level Japanese, this course covers speaking, writing, and listening. Fully taught in Japanese while speaking with native japanese students getting real practice for everyday conversations.

This is a listening and speaking course that improves conversational skills and listening comprehension by recreating daily social interactions. In the last month of the course, all students were challenged to give a presentation in Japanese.

The course is designed for improving reading and writing skills using compound sentences and applying previously learned grammar concepts, with the goal of improving clarity and cohesion in writing. With writing a review of a book or movie as a final project.

Japanese Popular Culture

Examines Japan in a global context from a transcultural perspective to find out how popular culture emerges, whose interests it serves, and what messages it communicates.

Japanese Literature

Explored cultural history of the supernatural in Japanese literary, visual and performing arts such as Kabuki. Gained an understanding of Japan's major historical and cultural developments, acquired the methodological skills necessary to analyze and critique sources and construct logical arguments.

Behavioral Economics and Public Policy

Explored how economic and psychological factors influence individual economic decisions, focusing on bounded rationality. Expanding learning on academic articles while learning foundational behavioral economics concepts and principles.

Contemporary Japanese Society

The course will discuss important issues in contemporary Japanese society, with the purpose of fostering a critical stance towards discourses around Japanese society and some specific topics related to it.
